A notable feature of this meeting was the participation of economist Tomás Bunster, representing the Office of the President-Elect José Antonio Kast. This follows the biminister García’s invitation to involve the economic team of the incoming administration directly in ongoing energy policy processes, signaling explicit intergovernmental continuity. Additionally, Hugo Briones, also representing the President-Elect’s Office, joined the recently convened Expert Committee reviewing Chile’s electricity regulatory framework.
The committee validated strategic priorities addressing critical challenges in the sector and reviewed progress in the 2023-2030 Green Hydrogen Action Plan. Emphasis was placed on integrating production of hydrogen with its derivatives, particularly ammonia, targeting both domestic demand and export markets. Participants underscored the necessity of ambitious yet realistic targets, fiscal-neutral economic instruments, and adaptable mechanisms for monitoring sector growth.
Consensus reinforced the importance of stable, long-term policies that provide certainty for public-private initiatives and promote local demand development. Collaboration on the international stage was identified as key, balancing competition with strategic partnerships to accelerate Chile’s green hydrogen industry. Maintaining and strengthening institutional capabilities within the State was also highlighted as essential to support industry deployment and regional development. The committee will reconvene in January to refine quantitative strategy elements before the draft’s public release.
