Juan Villavicencio, CEO of Engie Chile, emphasized that BESS Kallpa represents a critical element in integrating renewable generation with storage solutions, enhancing flexibility and resilience in the electric grid. Engie views this as a strategic move toward a secure and sustainable energy transition, particularly in Antofagasta, where the company has maintained a significant presence.
BESS Kallpa complements Engie’s robust Chilean portfolio of battery projects, which includes BESS Arica (34 MW/170 MWh), BESS Tocopilla (116 MW), BESS Lile (140 MW), BESS Los Loros (46 MW), and the combined photovoltaic and storage facility Libélula (151 MWp + 199 MW). Currently, Engie operates 267 MW of battery storage capacity in Chile. Globally, the company advances hybrid projects combining renewable generation and storage, leveraging international expertise to build more resilient and efficient energy systems. These developments align with national and international objectives for energy transition and grid modernization.
