Itaipú Binacional reached an unprecedented energy supply milestone in January 2026 by delivering 2,619 GWh to Paraguay’s national grid, reflecting continued growth in domestic electricity demand and reinforcing Itaipú’s strategic role in national energy security. Rising instantaneous power consumption and increased generation capacity signal expanding infrastructure demands and opportunities for further optimization in Paraguay’s power sector.
In January 2026, the Itaipú Hydroelectric Plant supplied 2,619 GWh of electricity to Paraguay through the Administración Nacional de Electricidad (ANDE), marking the highest ever monthly energy transfer recorded in the history of the binational facility. The total generation for the month reached 6,515 GWh, with 3,534 GWh generated on the 50 Hz system. The supplied volume corresponds to approximately three months of Paraguay’s electricity demand, underscoring Itaipú’s critical contribution to the country’s energy matrix. Availability of generating units was reported at 95.99%, exceeding the company target of 94%, indicating superior operational efficiency and effective maintenance practices. Coordinated operation with Brazil’s electric systems further enhanced resource optimization and system reliability.
Paraguay’s power demand exhibited record-breaking instantaneous peaks, with the Sistema Interconectado Nacional (SIN) reaching 5,752 MW on January 26, surpassing the previous record of 5,556 MW set earlier that month. Itaipú’s contribution to meeting peak demand was substantial, providing 4,241 MW, supplemented by 1,394 MW from Yacyretá and 136 MW from Acaray. This trend of increasing consumption reflects the government’s emphasis on leveraging binational-generated power to support economic development and urban growth.
In 2025, Itaipú supplied a total of 25,768 GWh to Paraguay, a 26.4% increase over 2024, demonstrating sustained growth in generation and supply. Annual power production rose by 8.6% to 72,879 GWh, sufficient to meet Paraguay’s demand for nearly 33 months. Financial transfers to the Paraguayan government amounted to USD 462 million, covering royalties and compensation, which support national and local budgets. The sector’s 10% revenue increase through Q3 2025 solidifies hydropower as a cornerstone of Paraguay’s economy and energy strategy.
