In December 2025, the plant recorded its highest monthly supply, exceeding 7,500 GWh, demonstrating its capacity to manage seasonal demand peaks amid increased ambient temperatures. Instantaneous power demand hit a national record of 5,280 MW during a heatwave, with Itaipu contributing 3,745 MW to stabilize the system, supported by complementary generation from Yacyretá and Acaray plants.
Financially, Itaipu transferred over US$460 million to Paraguay in royalties, energy compensation, and payments to ANDE, providing a significant funding source for the national treasury and infrastructure investments. The Central Bank of Paraguay reported a 10% revenue increase in the energy generation sector by Q3 2025, underlining the sector’s growing economic significance.
Despite these operational gains, tariff disputes persist, as Brazil and Paraguay maintain divergent cost-sharing frameworks, with ongoing negotiations addressing energy transfer prices and treaty compliance. Itaipu’s strategic position facilitates Paraguay’s industrialization trajectory while sustaining grid reliability amid rising consumption and environmental challenges, positioning the plant as a cornerstone of regional energy security and economic stability.
