Significant progress includes the completion of a satellite liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification plant in San Jerónimo, Cusco, with commissioning tests underway as of late 2025. This project is expected to connect 1,000 homes initially with plans to expand access to approximately 8,000 families. A second plant is forthcoming in the Espinar province, with infrastructure agreements secured and development scheduled to mirror the San Jerónimo model. Additionally, the gas distribution networks are advancing in regions such as Cusco, Huancavelica (currently 25.45% completed), Puno (in tender phase), and southern cities including Arequipa and Tacna, where multi-kilometer pipeline installations will extend service reach substantially.
The distribution strategy includes integrating existing gas pipelines from Camisea, notably from lot 31-C operated by Aguaytía Energy, to supply urban centers like Pucallpa in Ucayali, employing steel and polyethylene distribution networks to connect approximately 18,000 families initially. The government’s social inclusion initiative, Fondo de Inclusión Social Energético (FISE), has connected over one million consumers nationwide, indicating scalability for this continued rollout.
The expansion also features enhancement of gas vehicle infrastructure, with multiple gas natural vehicular (GNV) filling stations active and under development in Cusco to support a fleet exceeding 4,000 vehicles. The project delivers strategic benefits for national energy security, as natural gas presently accounts for around 40% of the nation’s electric generation, underscoring its centrality in Peru’s energy matrix.
Engagements with regional governments, energy firms, and civil society underscore the integrated multi-sector approach facilitating these expansions. The alignment of stakeholders, regulatory bodies, and private entities aims to overcome geographic and technical challenges inherent in these diverse regions. This ongoing initiative marks a critical step toward widespread natural gas masification, enhancing economic growth and social welfare through improved energy access.
