In addition, the ministry reported on a rural electrification project financed by its General Directorate of Rural Electrification (DGER), which will bring electricity access to more than 5,300 inhabitants in Caravelí, addressing critical service gaps in remote areas. Complementary efforts include the undergrounding of aerial electrical networks in historic city centers of Arequipa, Yanahuara, and Mejía to improve network resilience and urban aesthetics.
Looking ahead, the portfolio of 2026 projects is projected to benefit approximately 220,370 residents across the provinces of Arequipa, Camaná, Islay, Condesuyos, and Caylloma. MINEM emphasized a collaborative approach with distribution companies to promote responsible investment, reduce access disparities, and modernize the electricity system in southern Peru. These efforts align with the government’s broader objectives to secure reliable, efficient, and safe energy supply, underpinning regional economic growth and social inclusion.
Separately, MINEM continues to develop the mining sector, with a portfolio exceeding US$11.9 billion in planned investments through 2028, underscoring Peru’s strategic stance as a global mining hub. However, the current focus remains on advancing the southern electrical infrastructure to meet growing demand while addressing longstanding service deficiencies in rural and urban zones.
These coordinated efforts by government and private utilities reflect Peru’s commitment to energy sector modernization and inclusive access ahead of nationwide investment cycles in the coming years.
