Sigdo Koppers, through its subsidiary Puerto Ventanas S.A., signed an agreement to acquire the Puerto Andino terminal in Mejillones, northern Chile, enhancing its port infrastructure portfolio in the Antofagasta Region. The acquisition aligns with growing global demand for strategic minerals and the upcoming operation of the Capricorn Bioceanic Corridor, positioning the company to expand logistics services in a key mining hub. Concurrently, ENGIE Chile advances its energy transition by divesting thermal coal assets to focus on cleaner energy technologies.
Puerto Ventanas S.A., a Sigdo Koppers subsidiary with over 35 years in maritime bulk cargo services, agreed on February 25, 2026, to purchase the Puerto Andino terminal from ENGIE Chile. The transaction, pending approval by Chile’s Fiscalía Nacional Económica, includes an asset with a berth depth of 18 meters—the deepest in Mejillones Bay—supporting Capesize vessels up to 198,500 displacement tons. Puerto Andino operates two Gantry cranes each with a discharge capacity of 1,500 metric tons per hour, and mechanized unloading systems compliant with the highest global standards for sustainable operations. The terminal handles over 6 million tons annually in solid and liquid bulk cargo and benefits from a 95% maritime availability with less than 5% closure due to storm conditions. The site also offers 75 hectares for backup or development, enabling future expansion.
The acquisition marks Puerto Ventanas’ strategic expansion beyond its existing facilities in Valparaíso, where it holds approximately half the market share for bulk solids and liquids, operating four docks capable of servicing Handymax, Supramax, and Panamax vessels. The move strengthens the company’s foothold in northern Chile’s mining-export corridor, expected to experience increased logistics demand.
Sigdo Koppers CEO Juan Eduardo Errázuriz emphasized the importance of the deal in responding to rising global strategic mineral demand and leveraging the Capricorn Bioceanic Corridor’s connectivity. Meanwhile, ENGIE Chile’s Managing Director of Generation, Laïlla Ducousso, described the sale as part of its decarbonization and coal plant reconversion strategy aimed at transitioning to cleaner technologies in Mejillones. Legal advisory was provided by Estudios Prieto for ENGIE and Rodríguez Rosende and Cía. for Puerto Ventanas, with competition matters overseen by Estudio Ferrada Nehme.
