The project encompasses comprehensive modernization of the existing dock, construction of a specialized container terminal, installation of modern gantry cranes, and development of new storage yards. The infrastructure investment will expand the port’s annual cargo handling capacity from 60,000 tons to 550,000 tons. Container handling capacity will increase dramatically from an average of 500 TEUs annually over the past decade to a potential 450,000 TEUs under optimal operational scenarios, representing a 900-fold multiplication of containerized cargo capacity.
Located in Ferrol Bay in Santa province within the Áncash region, the new terminal is designed as a multipurpose port serving fishing, agroindustrial, and mining sectors. The facility will strengthen northern Peru’s port network and connect with logistics corridors extending into the Peruvian jungle region. Construction is projected to generate approximately 2,000 direct and indirect jobs. The port’s enhanced capacity aims to strengthen Peru’s commercial connections with Asia-Pacific markets.
Luis Del Carpio, executive president of ProInversión, emphasized the agency’s more active role in accelerating strategic projects by intervening from early stages to organize processes and build investor confidence. Peru has modernized its port system over the past two decades with investments exceeding $5 billion, developing self-sustaining infrastructure without committing state resources. The country currently operates nine concessioned port terminals, consolidating Peru as a major maritime and commercial connection point in the region.
For 2026, ProInversión has prioritized a port investment portfolio exceeding $400 million targeting strategic facilities in Loreto with the Sinchicuy and Saramiriza terminals, Pucallpa, and Tacna. The expansion program responds to growing demand and connectivity requirements, aiming to establish a more efficient and competitive national logistics network.
