Aguas Andinas emphasized that this transition to renewable electricity constitutes a significant advance in reducing emissions linked to the company’s electricity consumption, aligning with its sustainability ethos and carbon neutrality commitment targeted for 2050. The energy volume contracted is equivalent to the environmental benefit of planting nearly 600,000 trees or taking over 16,000 vehicles off the road. José Sáez, Aguas Andinas’ general manager, highlighted the integration of sustainability as intrinsic to operations and the PPA as a strategic move to lower the carbon footprint of its water cycle services essential to the capital’s population.
Colbún CEO José Ignacio Escobar characterized the agreement as part of the generator’s expanding portfolio of renewables, sourced from its solar, wind, and hydropower assets. He underscored Colbún’s capacity to offer competitive pricing supported by asset-backed generation and tailored contract flexibility, positioning it as a reliable partner for large corporate renewable energy supply contracts in Chile’s evolving market. The deal follows a precedent set in 2023 when Colbún signed a similar PPA with Aguas Pacífico for 280 GWh annually of renewable power for industrial and rural water sanitation clients in Valparaíso and the Metropolitan Region.
This transaction aligns both companies with national objectives to achieve carbon neutrality by mid-century and supports Chile’s ongoing expansion of renewable energy procurement mechanisms within critical infrastructure sectors. It also reinforces the trend of integrating sustainable energy solutions into water management, a sector with intensive electricity demand and significant emissions reduction potential.
