The mismatch stems from rapid solar and wind buildout in a system where northern generation far exceeds local consumption and transmission lines to central demand hubs face chronic congestion. Energy Minister Ximena Rincón framed the challenge as transforming Chile’s renewable potential into deployable projects with clear regulatory frameworks and territorial value creation. Battery energy storage systems have emerged as the primary mitigation tool, with installed capacity jumping from 1,005 MW in June 2025 to 2,071 MW by March 2026, surpassing the government’s 2030 benchmark four years ahead of schedule. By September 2026, total BESS capacity including projects under construction reached 11,231 MW across 138 installations, a 160% year-on-year increase.
Storage systems injected approximately 2,400 GWh between January and July 2026, nearly matching the period’s total curtailment. Industry projections indicate curtailment could fall 77% in December 2026 compared to December 2025 as additional battery capacity enters operation. Analysts forecast sustained reductions from 2027 onward as construction-phase storage completes commissioning and new solar installations moderate.
Distributed generation is gaining traction as an alternative response pathway. Mining and construction sectors are deploying mobile solar-plus-storage units that generate and store power directly at remote or temporary sites, eliminating diesel dependency and fuel logistics. BLP Chile’s Solar Nomad system exemplifies the model, installing containerized photovoltaic arrays on 20-foot and 40-foot ISO platforms that relocate with operations and scale to site-specific loads. Separately, over 12,000 Chileans enrolled in a free online solar installation course organized by NGO Uno Punto Cinco and the University of Chile’s Energy Center, with 86.4% declaring no prior technical knowledge, signaling residential interest in self-generation as electricity costs rise.
