Currently, Rosario processes about 22,000 tons of municipal waste monthly, mostly disposed of at the Ricardone sanitary landfill via controlled burial. Complementary to landfill operations, the Bella Vista Composting Plant handles 90-100 tons daily of organic waste, producing compost for urban green spaces. Recycling efforts leverage a citywide container network and cooperatives that recover paper, plastic, glass, and metals, reinforcing the circular economy framework. The proposed biogas project does not replace these efforts but builds upon them by valorizing landfill emissions.
Provincial plans envision scaling this model beyond municipal boundaries, exploiting urban, industrial, and agro-industrial biomass residues to generate clean energy and exportable emission reduction certificates. The local scientific and technological ecosystem supports deploying state-of-the-art extraction infrastructure, anticipated to inject significant volumes of renewable energy into Argentina’s national grid. The transformation from an expense to an income source promises fiscal relief for municipalities, enabling redirected investments toward infrastructure while mitigating environmental liabilities. This biogas initiative aligns with broader climate action targets and modernizes urban waste handling in a region with ample biomass availability and growing bioenergy expertise.
