Transelec acquires 200-kilometer transmission line from Ferrovial to strengthen southern Chile grid

Transelec completed the acquisition of 100 percent of Transchile Charrúa Transmisión from Spanish infrastructure group Ferrovial following months of negotiations finalized in May 2026. The transaction transfers control of approximately 200 kilometers of transmission infrastructure spanning from the Charrúa substation in the Biobío Region to the Cautín substation in the Araucanía Region. The corridor forms part of Chile’s National Electric System and serves as critical infrastructure for power delivery to southern regions while enabling renewable energy injection from wind and other clean generation sources in the area.

The transmission line is classified as a regulated strategic asset essential for electricity supply reliability across southern Chile. The infrastructure facilitates integration of renewable generation from wind farms and other clean energy projects into the national grid, addressing growing demand for transmission capacity as solar, wind, and battery storage installations expand throughout the country. The acquisition positions Transelec to manage increased power flows from renewable sources that require robust transmission networks to reach load centers and prevent grid congestion.

Olivia Heuts, Transelec’s Vice President of Business Development, characterized the infrastructure as a backbone for southern zone electricity supply, stating the acquisition aligns with the company’s strategic growth plan. The executive emphasized the transaction reinforces Transelec’s capability to execute complex mergers and acquisitions focused on first-tier transmission assets. The deal expands Transelec’s footprint in Chile’s regulated transmission market at a time when grid reinforcement has become essential to accommodate renewable energy growth and improve system stability.

The acquisition unfolds as Chile experiences accelerated development of renewable projects and energy storage systems, elevating the strategic importance of transmission networks. Strengthening electrical infrastructure is considered fundamental to reducing congestion, enhancing system stability, and facilitating integration of new solar, wind, and battery storage capacity across different regions.
