Argentina currently serves as Chile’s second-largest energy supplier after the United States. Chilean energy product imports totaled $14.416 billion in 2025, with Argentina providing $2.876 billion or approximately 20 percent of the total. Chile imports nearly all consumed hydrocarbons and seeks supply diversification following price increases linked to Middle Eastern conflict, referenced in sources as war in Iran.
The Chilean Foreign Ministry stated the country offers port infrastructure, LNG terminals, regulatory experience, logistical capacity, and geographic positioning to explore long-term routes toward Pacific markets. Argentina requires increased export revenue to improve foreign currency inflows, creating complementary interests between the neighboring economies.
Beyond energy cooperation, Chilean and Argentine officials signed two joint declarations during the visit focused on commercial, logistical, and energy development. Both governments agreed to establish the Pichachén International Pass as a key element of a bioceanic corridor connecting Biobío and Neuquén regions between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Chile committed to paving 58 kilometers of road to the international border and advancing integrated control systems to expedite vehicle transit, while Argentina pledged to improve roads linking Pichachén with El Cholar, Los Guañacos, Los Miches, and Andacollo.
Biobío regional governor Sergio Giacaman indicated objectives include advancing gas supply from Vaca Muerta, positioning Biobío as a central-southern logistical hub, and implementing commitments for the Pichachén pass with year-round operation. A separate conference in Argentina’s national Senate analyzed integration challenges and opportunities, with legislators emphasizing the need for long-term infrastructure investment and regulatory stability to attract capital and consolidate export-oriented production chains across mining, energy, agriculture, and industry sectors.
