Toyota Chile executive director Ignacio Funés stated the multi-pathway strategy enables emissions reductions through the combination of hybrids and e-fuels. HIF Global regional manager Juan Eduardo Gallardo emphasized Magallanes’ strategic role in synthetic fuel production and the potential for such pilot experiences to accelerate adoption. Regional presidential delegate José Antonio Ruiz and Energy and Environment Secretary Sergio Cuitiño participated in the launch panel addressing decarbonization challenges.
The Haru Oni facility, which began production in September 2021, represents the world’s first operational e-fuel plant with total investment of $78 million. The plant occupies 3.7 hectares and currently produces 130,000 liters of e-fuel annually using a 3.4 MW wind turbine and 1.2 MW electrolyzer. Porsche holds significant participation in the facility, which captures CO2 from biogenic sources and combines it with green hydrogen through synthesis to produce synthetic gasoline and liquefied gas.
HIF Global and partners plan to scale production to 55 million liters by 2026 and 550 million liters by decade’s end. Porsche utilized Haru Oni fuel in all 510-horsepower 911 GT3 Cup vehicles during the 2024 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season, achieving near-carbon-neutral racing operations. HIF Global’s vision targets 150,000 barrels per day of e-fuel production by 2035, capturing over 25 million tons of CO2.
The expansion plans emerge as Chile’s pellet market faces regulatory clarity issues. The Los Lagos regional energy secretary stated in August 2026 that pellet markets remain private, with the state unable to define production volumes or prices, indicating ongoing market structure discussions as Chile develops its renewable fuel sectors.
