The $250 million Tamarico Phase II solar facility represents a strategic renewable energy project in the Atacama Region’s Huasco Province, specifically in Vallenar commune. The installation will comprise 281,700 bifacial photovoltaic modules generating 159.6 MW AC nominal capacity and 169.02 MW DC peak capacity for injection into Chile’s National Electric System. The Copiaport-E port infrastructure project in Atacama Region carries a $450 million investment for construction and operation across Caldera and Copiapó communes, while the Los Angeles landfill extension in Biobío Region involves $15.5 million.
In a separate session in May, the committee approved three major initiatives totaling $2.83 billion, including the Volta green hydrogen and ammonia plant with $2.5 billion in investment, the Ciclón-Exploradora mining project at $125 million, and the Urbanya Etapa 1 real estate development at $203 million. The Volta facility in Antofagasta Region represents Chile’s first industrial-scale green ammonia plant with annual production capacity of 620,000 tons of green ammonia and 110,000 tons of green hydrogen, powered by a 600 MW solar installation across 900 hectares.
The Ciclón-Exploradora underground mining operation targets polymetallic production including copper, zinc, silver, lead, and gold with a 16-year operational life across Antofagasta and Atacama regions. Analysis by Smart Compliance partner Raimundo Pérez indicates the committee has resolved 40% of previously stalled investments, with eight projects totaling $5.04 billion awaiting decisions, led by the $2.5 billion Volta hydrogen project and the Kimal-Lo Aguirre transmission line. The accelerated processing contrasts with historical delays, as evidenced by the Copiaport-E project originally submitted in September 2020.
