The election’s most significant surprise came from the collapse of Centro Democrático candidate Paloma Valencia, who captured only 6.9% despite polling at 15% before election day. Valencia, backed by former President Álvaro Uribe, immediately endorsed De la Espriella for the runoff, declaring Colombia would not fall into the “neo-communism” represented by Cepeda and Petro. Centrist candidate Sergio Fajardo finished fourth with 4.3%, withholding his endorsement while emphasizing his voters would prove decisive in the runoff.
President Gustavo Petro refused to accept preliminary results on election night, stating he would only recognize outcomes certified by judicial electoral commissions rather than the Registraduría’s quick count. Petro cited “atypical voting patterns” and alleged irregularities, though his candidate Cepeda subsequently acknowledged the results the following day, stating no fraud of sufficient magnitude occurred to invalidate outcomes. Cepeda confirmed recognition of the count while maintaining criticism of what he termed foreign government interference.
International reaction split along ideological lines. Argentine President Javier Milei and Spanish conservative leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo congratulated De la Espriella, with Milei characterizing the result as rejection of the “failed socialist model” damaging the region. De la Espriella identified the United States as Colombia’s “principal ally” and called for international monitoring of the second round.
The electoral context reflects intense polarization following Petro’s government agenda including a 2025 popular consultation and labor reform. The campaign period was also marked by the assassination of pre-candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay in August 2025. Political analysts note the runoff will test whether Valencia’s conservative voters migrate entirely to De la Espriella or whether Cepeda can attract centrist support from Fajardo’s base and undecided voters.
