In Guayas province, outages will occur during early morning hours, with cantons including Samborondón, Daule, Palestina, Colimes, Salitre, Balzar, and Guayaquil experiencing cuts from 03:00 to 06:00 on Saturday, May 30, and from 04:00 to 06:00 on Sunday, May 31. Additional disruptions are scheduled for the following weekend in early June.
The preventive maintenance campaign responds directly to recent problems at Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric plant, which reduced generation capacity on May 21 due to sediment buildup. The facility, Ecuador’s largest power generation asset, halted operations for at least five hours, causing temporary supply disruptions across the national grid. Authorities indicated the maintenance program aims to strengthen operational capacity of the national electrical system and reduce risks during potential climate emergencies.
Energy specialists warned that the government’s announced infrastructure work must be complemented by new generation capacity given Ecuador’s current deficit of approximately 900 megawatts. The country’s structural generation shortfall makes the electrical system particularly vulnerable to seasonal climate phenomena like El Niño, which can reduce hydroelectric output when rainfall patterns shift.
Citizens are preparing backup equipment including rechargeable lights, uninterruptible power supplies, and generators, mirroring previous responses to power rationing episodes. The government’s decision to implement weekend-focused outages appears designed to minimize economic disruption while allowing critical maintenance across distribution networks before potential El Niño conditions intensify pressure on already constrained generation resources.
