The facility will generate sufficient clean energy to supply the equivalent of 90,000 households annually and avoid the emission of 160,000 tons of CO2 per year. Bernardo Andrews, CEO of Genneia, stated that the project represents a strategic step in strengthening the company’s presence in San Juan, noting that the commissioning of San Juan Sur will bring the firm’s installed capacity in the province to 350 MW. The development forms part of Genneia’s five-year investment plan covering 2022 to 2026, targeting nearly $900 million in total investments across multiple renewable projects including the La Elbita wind farm in Buenos Aires province and solar developments in San Juan and Mendoza provinces. The company aims to exceed 1.7 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2026.
San Juan Governor Marcelo Orrego emphasized that the project not only advances a cleaner energy matrix but also promotes local employment and sustainable economic development, highlighting the province’s pioneering role in renewable development by leveraging solar resources.
In a parallel development, the San Juan provincial government announced plans to construct the province’s first hybrid solar park with lithium battery storage in the Iglesia department. The project will feature 10 MW of installed photovoltaic capacity paired with a 30 MWh battery energy storage system, with total investment reaching 18.614 billion pesos. The initiative will be financed through resources from mining activity, specifically from the Veladero Project Phase VI fiduciary infrastructure fund. The hybrid facility marks the first integration of large-scale lithium battery storage with solar generation in San Juan, representing a technological advancement beyond conventional photovoltaic installations.
