The installation targets approximately 350 MW of additional capacity for regional distribution utilities by redistributing power flows across the meshed network. Voltage source converters will be installed in series with line entry modules on both circuits, enabling active control of power distribution parameters to direct flows toward transmission paths with available headroom. The solution addresses restrictions documented by the National Electric System Operator and the Energy Research Company, particularly concerning contingency scenarios when one circuit becomes unavailable.
Technical studies supporting the authorization identified the need to improve evacuation of generation from solar plants in Minas Gerais and optimize energy transfer between the two states. The SSSC deployment is projected to reduce loading on the Poços de Caldas – São João da Boa Vista II line by approximately 38 percent, creating operational margin for demand growth across the Mogi Mirim, Araras and Atibaia electrical regions. The 24-month regulatory timeline positions the project for completion by 2028.
The transmission reinforcement responds to concentration of energy-intensive industrial segments in the region, including data centers, ceramics manufacturers, petrochemical facilities and pulp and paper operations. Expansion of grid capacity reduces supply constraints associated with transmission bottlenecks as these sectors pursue facility expansion and new project development.
ISA Energia Brasil’s deployment of FACTS technology represents an infrastructure optimization approach that increases utilization of existing assets without requiring immediate construction of new transmission corridors. The company’s executive director for projects noted that the Ribeirão Preto installation demonstrated capacity to enhance operational flexibility, providing reference experience for the larger-scale São João da Boa Vista application. The project combines technological intervention with complementary reconductoring and reconstruction works as part of integrated grid expansion planning.
