The electricity demand surge reflects sustained acceleration and expansion of economic activity nationwide, placing constant pressure on the electrical system particularly during winter months. For the first four months of 2026, total consumption reached 12,204.3 GWh compared to 10,087.9 GWh in the prior-year period, marking a 21% increase.
Itaipú Binacional dominated supply throughout the period, providing 2,262.2 GWh in May and 2,403.3 GWh in April. The January-June period saw Itaipú contribute 2,170,211 MWh to the system. The Entidad Binacional Yacyretá supplied 81.1 GWh in May and 186.1 GWh in April, while contributing 104,275 MWh across the first half. Central Hidroeléctrica Acaray delivered 39.5 GWh in May, 53.7 GWh in April, and 36,120 MWh for the six-month period.
The Puerto Esperanza photovoltaic plant in the Chaco region began injecting power into the National Interconnected System, marking a milestone in Paraguay’s energy matrix diversification toward alternative renewable sources. The facility contributed approximately 27.56 MWh in May, over 30 MWh in April, and around 26 MWh during the initial operating period. While representing minimal volume relative to hydroelectric sources, the solar injection establishes Paraguay’s first utility-scale photovoltaic participation in national supply, previously dependent almost entirely on hydropower.
ANDE confirmed continuation of planned strategic infrastructure projects to maintain reliable service quality amid the high-demand scenario driven by productive sector requirements and population growth.
