The state operator emphasized the participation of qualified sector companies to support rehabilitation of potential damage while preventing service providers from charging above-market prices during the emergency response.
Domegas president Arístides Moreno-Méndez stated inspections began June 24 across buildings affected by seismic activity and additional properties where condominium associations reported potential gas leaks. The protocol involves verification using specific detection equipment to evaluate internal building lines, with condominiums required to select certified contractors for repairs when leaks are confirmed. Moreno-Méndez stressed that buildings that shut off service must restore operations in an orderly manner and avoid replacing piped gas systems with cylinders or electric stoves in spaces not designed for such installations.
The inspection scope covers external networks supplying the 600,000 Caracas users as well as internal building piping potentially damaged by seismic movement. Domegas received modern leak detection equipment to instrument the accelerated reconnection process starting June 30.
Reinaldo Quintero, president of industry association Petropimi, confirmed the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and PDVSA held coordination meetings with sector organizations and natural gas distributors. The arrangement addresses both gasified areas with piped service and zones relying on LPG cylinders. In La Guaira, supply predominantly occurs through LPG cylinders, while Caracas maintains extensive pipeline infrastructure operated by PDVSA Gas and Domegas. Industry sources estimate only 20 percent of Venezuela’s population accesses direct residential and industrial natural gas networks.
