Lot 5 represents the first battery storage system contracted at transmission level in Brazil’s national interconnected system. The specification calls for 100 MW capacity and 200 MWh energy at Cruzeiro do Sul and Feijó in Acre state, targeting supply reliability for the isolated western region. The concession runs 18 years rather than 30, aligned with battery service life expectations. Grid-forming inverter requirements are specified, and the concessionaire must address both initial investment and system availability maintenance throughout the term.
The Acre deployment addresses local reliability rather than the curtailment problem concentrated in Brazil’s northeast, where 20.6 percent of available solar and wind output was lost in 2025. In the first quarter of 2026, an average 2,843 MW was curtailed, 17.2 percent of potential generation, with the northeast alone accounting for 2,233 MW against 476 MW in the southeast. That curtailment challenge targets a separate auction track: Brazil’s first dedicated battery auction is scheduled for December 2 and 4, 2026, with 6,091 projects registered and the northeast accounting for 71.1 percent of registered capacity. The market expects up to 6 gigawatts contracted against a 2 gigawatt minimum.
Brazil’s BESS market remains at an early stage with approximately 1.4 GWh contracted to date, concentrated in off-grid applications serving remote communities. Global installed capacity reached approximately 100 GWh in 2025, with 65 to 70 percent in front-of-the-meter configurations, concentrated in the United States and Asia-Pacific. Roberto Valer, CTO of Huawei Digital Power Brasil, identifies substantial growth potential in the commercial and industrial segment driven by electricity cost reduction through energy arbitrage, deferral of grid reinforcement investments as an alternative to transmission expansion, and diesel substitution in agribusiness, mining and other fuel-intensive sectors.
