Guyana Enhances Defense Infrastructure Amid Ongoing Territorial Dispute with Venezuela and Regional Security Challenges

Guyana’s government has prioritized significant investment in defense over the past five years, with an 800% increase in budget allocations directed toward advanced technology acquisition, personnel training, and alliance building. Brigadier Omar Khan, Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), emphasized the political nature of Venezuela’s claim to the 160,000 square kilometer Esequibo territory, advocating for resolution through the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Meanwhile, in May 2025, Venezuela’s unilateral referendum and appointment of a military governor in the disputed area heightened tensions but did not trigger any immediate military conflict. Guyana maintains vigilance through enhanced defense measures, including the procurement of a new oceanic patrol vessel and equipment to monitor airspace and the Exclusive Economic Zone.

In March 2025, Guyana inaugurated the Ogle Hangar Air Station near Georgetown, a $1.1 million upgrade that expands the operational reach of the GDF Air Corps. This facility accommodates maintenance, storage, and rapid deployment capabilities for aircraft servicing the Atlantic coast, complementing operations from the main Air Station London at Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
