Phase one comprises the Chimú substation at 220/60 kilovolt levels with a 50 MVA three-phase transformer, two 220 kilovolt line bays and three bays at 60 kilovolts including one transformation cell. The works included sectioning the existing Chimbote–Trujillo Norte 220 kilovolt line L-2232 and the Virú–Chao 60 kilovolt line L-6697 to integrate the new facility. Ferdinand Freitas Do Vale, project manager at ISA ENERGÍA, stated the substation will strengthen subtransmission capacity to serve loads south of Trujillo in the initial phase, with the definitive stage ensuring long-term reinforcement aligned with national transmission planning and system reliability requirements under the ISA 2040 strategy.
The definitive phase will expand Chimú substation to incorporate 138 kilovolt infrastructure alongside the existing 220 and 60 kilovolt levels. This configuration adds a 96-120 MVA autotransformer bank with an additional spare unit and a 50-60 MVA three-phase transformer. The project forms part of the transmission expansion plan to accommodate load growth in a region experiencing sustained economic and demographic development, particularly in agricultural and industrial zones between Trujillo and Chimbote along the northern Peruvian coast.
The infrastructure deployment reflects transmission operators’ response to demand pressures in areas where urban expansion and commercial activity require system reinforcement beyond existing capacity thresholds. ISA ENERGÍA maintains construction protocols aligned with its corporate safety standards, emphasizing worker and contractor protection during execution. The project timeline positions the final configuration for operation before the 2027-2028 summer peak demand period, when coastal regions typically register maximum load levels driven by irrigation pumping and cooling requirements across residential and industrial sectors.
