Elena currently operates with 3.5 gigawatt-hours of nominal installed capacity, equivalent to 3 GW net, and plans call for expansion to 7 GWh or 6 GW net capacity. The facility comprises 624 containers housing 6,240 batteries, making it the largest battery plant in the Americas. Chilean President José Antonio Kast Rist presided over the plant’s recent inauguration, joined by Energy Minister Ximena Rincón and Science Minister Ximena Lincolao.
The battery installation forms part of Oasis de Atacama, Grenergy’s integrated solar and storage platform that has been expanded to 2.5 GW of solar capacity paired with 14.1 GWh of storage in the company’s roadmap through 2028. This hybridization model is being replicated at Oasis Central in central Chile, featuring 1.4 GW solar and 5.1 GWh storage, and exported to Spain through Iberian Oasis with 1 GW solar and 3.2 GWh battery capacity. Combined, the three OASIS platforms total 5 GW of solar generation and 22 GWh of energy storage.
The current agreement follows Grenergy’s first nocturnal PPA signed in November 2023 with EMOAC, a subsidiary of Chilean fuel distributor Copec. That earlier contract covered more than 8 TWh over 15 years with supply starting between 2026 and 2027. Grenergy CEO David Ruiz de Andrés stated the new agreement reinforces business visibility and stability while providing coverage for Elena, which has capacity to double in the near term.
Grenergy established operations in Chile in 2012 and uses the country as its South American headquarters. The company has connected more than 70 plants in Chile with total project capacity exceeding 1.3 GW across operational and under-construction assets.
