Mikko Kantero, executive vice president for portfolio management and growth at Korkia, stated that energy access limitations for data centers coincide with rising pressure on electrical systems from broader demand growth, opening investment opportunities in renewable generation, storage and associated infrastructure. Korkia entered Chile in 2023 through partnerships with Ciudad Luz and Solar Ray, building a portfolio that now includes solar projects, hybrid solar-BESS facilities and standalone battery systems.
The company already operates projects combining generation, storage and new connection infrastructure in Chile. The Terrazas hybrid project in Coquimbo region comprises 280 MW solar capacity and 1,240 MWh storage, with the National Energy Commission approving the 220 kV sectioning substation for grid connection in April. In early September Korkia reported progress on two additional projects: Mellizas in Ñuble, combining 218 MW solar with 800 MWh battery storage and receiving environmental approval, and Beltrán, a standalone 750 MWh storage system in Valparaíso region reaching ready-to-build status.
The portfolio also includes Paicaví, a 150 MW / 750 MWh battery project in La Pintana in the Metropolitan region, which received environmental approval this year. The project involves estimated investment of $90 million and connection near the Mariscal substation. Korkia maintains that its experience in land acquisition, permitting, grid access, renewable generation and storage provides the foundation for developing the new data center sites. Kantero noted that the company can assemble land, permits, grid access, renewable generation and energy storage through its platform and local partnerships.
Korkia reports an advanced global portfolio of 15 GW including large-scale solar, wind, battery systems and now powered land sites for data centers, with an additional 9 GW of renewable and storage projects in early development stages. The powered land strategy extends activity the company already pursues in Chile in solar generation and storage, positioning it to capture demand from digital infrastructure expansion constrained by grid capacity and energy availability.
