Mikko Kantero, executive vice president for portfolio management and growth at Korkia, framed the opportunity as a direct response to grid pressure from rising electricity demand. The company defines powered land as sites where land tenure and data center permits are secured or in progress, and where electrical capacity and grid connection rights are guaranteed or clearly established. Renewable generation and battery storage can be co-located or integrated into the same electrical infrastructure.
The approach builds on Korkia’s existing Chilean project pipeline, which demonstrates the bundling model. The Terrazas hybrid project in Coquimbo region comprises 280 MW of solar capacity and 1,240 MWh of storage, with a 220 kV sectioning substation authorized by the National Energy Commission in April for connection to the national grid. In early September, Korkia reported progress on two additional projects: Mellizas in Ñuble, combining 218 MW solar with 800 MWh storage and securing environmental approval, and Beltrán, a 750 MWh standalone battery system in Valparaíso region that reached ready-to-build status.
The company’s Chilean portfolio also includes Paicaví, a 150 MW / 750 MWh battery project in La Pintana, Metropolitan Region, which received environmental approval this year. That project carries an estimated investment of $90 million and is planned for connection near the Mariscal substation.
Korkia maintains a global advanced portfolio of 15 GW spanning large-scale solar, wind, battery storage and now powered land sites, with another 9 GW in early-stage development. The powered land strategy positions the company to capture demand from data center operators seeking reliable power access in markets where grid capacity has become a limiting factor for new digital infrastructure investment. Chile’s renewable energy resources, established permitting frameworks and grid interconnection procedures provide a foundation for integrating data center load with new clean generation capacity.
